Exploring Tenerife's Hidden Gem: The Roques de Anaga Hiking Experience

Introduction to Rural Park Anaga

Rural Park Anaga, located in the east of Tenerife, is especially popular among hiking enthusiasts and regular visitors for its unique views, best beaches, and distinct microclimate. In the height of summer, when the weather in Tenerife can be quite hot, here you can find coolness and even rain. The park offers numerous hiking routes catering to all tastes and physical abilities.

A Special Trail to Discover

I am particularly fond of one trail that I discovered two years ago. This experience can only be undertaken a few times a year, usually in March or February when the sea tides in Tenerife are very low.

The Roques de Anaga: A Stunning Landmark

The most striking point of this trail has been seen by many when they visited the famous Benijo beach. It is a large rock, located 200 meters off the shore in the ocean - Roques de Anaga. When you hike somewhere in the mountains of Anaga, you can clearly see this place from above. However, the small path, a sandbar covered with stones, is constantly covered by large waves.

The Key to the Perfect Experience: Low Tides and Calm Seas

The main condition for success is the presence of an extremely low tide of -1.4 (-1.3) meters, as well as the absence of strong waves. These conditions typically occur early in the morning or late in the evening. To make this hike, we arrived the evening before in Taganana, where we booked a room for the night. The maximum tide of 1.4 meters was at 7 a.m. So, we set off early in the morning.

Beginning the Adventure

We left our car in the village of Benijo, as further access by personal vehicle is prohibited. In about 40 minutes, we reached El Dragillo. From there, the more extreme part of the route began, following the slope of the mountain. All of this had to be done in complete darkness, using flashlights.

Hacienda Las Palmas De Anaga: A Historic Stop

We finally reached Hacienda Las Palmas De Anaga. There were abandoned, semi-ruined buildings that now represent historical value. Once, the economic life of the region thrived here. Anaga survived economically by producing wine.

The Steep Trail and Stunning Views

The trail to Playa de Las Breñas turned out to be quite steep. From there, the view of Roques de Anaga was even more impressive! It’s a huge rock in the ocean, home to various species of birds. The animals clearly didn’t expect our morning visit. It took us some time to get used to their calls and commotion. We had about 40 minutes for a photo session before we had to hurry back before the tide came in.

The Next Opportunity for This Adventure

The next maximum low tide is expected on March 1st at 8:10 a.m. and 8:20 p.m. (-1.4 meters). If you’re looking to experience this remarkable hike, plan your trip during these low tide conditions for an unforgettable adventure.
